The hallucinogenic drug psilocybin may help reduce anxiety for patients suffering from advanced stage cancer, according to a study released Monday by the Archives of General Psychiatry.
Psilocybin is the active component found in hallucinogenic, or "magic," mushrooms. Its popular recreational use, as well as that of other hallucinogens, caused medical researchers in the early 1970s to halt investigations of potential benefits the class of drugs could hold, the study notes.
