What new airline fees are coming in 2011? Just when weary air travelers think that there couldn't possibly any additional charges to fly, they are about to get a nasty little surprise on their next flight.
Right now airlines charge extra for everything from checking bags to food and early boarding. Surely they have fee'd everybody out, haven't they? No, there is actually room for more fees, and 2011 may just be the year that brings them to air travelers.
What crazy airline fees may you be paying the next time you fly? Well, how much do you like talking to a real person when you check in? Yes, you will be charged for that. Another shocking fee that may soon crop up is paying for a baby to sit on your lap. That seems ridiculous. Babies do not weigh very much, so that can't possibly be the justification. Would you enjoy using the bathroom during a flight? There's a fee for that (well maybe not just yet, but it is possible).
This fee-ridden trend is essentially a la carte pricing for your airfare. However, there are certain fees that are almost impossible to avoid, so it is tough to actually only pay the rock bottom base fare pricing. Some people are convinced that airlines are addicted to these charges, and those people are probably right. In the third quarter of 2010, the entire industry collected a total of $2.1 billion in additional charges. Wow!
