A Checotah woman and her son narrowly escaped being inside their home when a fire began early Thursday.

Estelle Mills said they had left their home about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday night for Muskogee.

She received a call about 40 minutes later informing her their home was ablaze.

Mills’ two dogs, Biscuit and Scrappie, did not survive the fire.
