Thanks to a new initiative, some California college students may be coming out to their university before they even meet their roommates.

The questions will appear in the same manner as questions about race and sex are on college application and enrollment forms and will be voluntary, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Officials told the newspaper the aim is to measure the amount of resources devoted to gay, bisexual, lesbian and transsexual students.

“It would be useful to know if we are underserving the population,” Jesse Bernal, the UC system's interim diversity coordinator told the newspaper.
